Are you sure you don’t have asbestos in your home?

According to the Australian government’s Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency, one third of all homes in Australia contain asbestos products. Asbestos could easily be hiding in areas of your home you least expect such as:

  • gutters and downpipes
  • gables and eaves
  • vinyl, carpet and tile underlay
  • lining behind wall tiles
  • imitation brick cladding
  • fencing
  • sheds
  • splashbacks in wet areas
It can be difficult to determine whether building materials contain asbestos just by looking at them. The only way to get 100% confirmation is to conduct asbestos testing or sampling. This involves collecting a sample from the materials suspected of containing asbestos for testing in a laboratory. The task of collecting samples must be done correctly and safely so that both the person taking the sample and those in the surrounding area are not put at risk.

How is a sample taken?

The Jim’s professional brought in to do the job will ask you to vacate the premises while testing is carried out and protect themselves by wearing a mask and gloves. A visual inspection will be carried out in conjunction with sampling. Once the sample has been taken, they will patch the tested area to prevent fibre release. Samples are then sent to an accredited National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) asbestos testing laboratory to confirm the presence of asbestos.

Test results

The asbestos test result will either state that no asbestos has been detected or will specify the type of asbestos fibres identified in the sample as:

  • Chrysotile asbestos (white)
  • Amosite asbestos (brown)
  • Crocidolite asbestos (blue)
If the presence of asbestos in your home is confirmed, the team at Jim’s Asbestos Removal can then advise you on the safest and most effective solutions to combat the asbestos danger in your home.
